The days of the simple ability to control a site with a single password has passed. Yes it probably happened a bit ago but let me relate a few instances of unusual password problems.
1) While getting info for setting up a payment program I was given the proper password and login. Well almost there was a problem with transcribing a pin the password that should have been a capital T not the lower case t that was passed to me.. Got past that hurdle. Then when I got inside and thought the access would finally be done lo and behold I find the need for another security password. That took a few days to recover from the customer. End result an operation that should have taken 1/2 hour to do took three weeks.
2) Another customer had a much worse problem. The login password for the hosting provider was wrong so the password was reset and sent to the proper Email. Then trying to get access to the Email we hit another problem. The password wasn’t written down. No fear there is a way to get the password reset by answering the old secret questions. After answering the first two questions the last one wasn’t right. Tried different answers until it was locked out for 12 hours. Then since we could not get to the Email where the reset password was sent had to goto the hosting provider and fill out a long form to set the password reset and sent to a different Email. I’m working on transferring the customer from on provider to another. So I need the rest password from the hosting site to acquire a set of passwords to transfer the hosting to another site where I will need the login and password to enable the transfer. What should be a simple operation turns out to be a real exercise in patience.
So the next time you start working with your passwords be very sure to keep them active and properly recorded off of the PC. After all a little non-backed up hard drive failure can really ruin your day while arguing with those other issues
