Branching concepts happen when the original concept “A” suggests a different usage into  “B One” ,”C Two” or “D Three” areas. Changing the usage of the concept can be done without  modifying  the concept but is not the typical direction branching takes. Normal branching involves a modification of the concept that yields new areas of use and the ability to solve problems unstated in the “A” concept.

Write down where the branches go and how the use of the concept gets adjusted to for the new fit. Branching should be done like exploration. You don’t know what might happen unless you try it. Dumb branches might be smarter than you know. I’ll cover how to work with dumb ideas in another post.

Conceptual ideas often starts from an observation and a  “What if” scenario. This  typically involves improvements or modifications of the observed function.

Keeping the concept with one person is a mistake. All ideas make sense in your own skull. Only when the concept is communicated properly can it be judged. Communication of the rough concept presents a challenge because many of the terms many be undefined.

Multiple discussions of the concept may be needed to flesh out the concept. The more times the concept is discussed the easier it is to find and use the right terminology. The concept should not be locked to it’s original form it should be allowed to adjust and adapt as it gets discussed. Every time the concept is talked about it will get modified and refined. Be sure to write down where the concept takes you. Many times it leads to dead ends. That indicates the concept is trying to find where it belongs.

Idea branching should be used to expand the usage and coverage of the concept.

When discussing multiple ideas I have noticed that concept seems to choose it’s own path. It’s a weird observation but if you try to restrain the concept by keeping it confined to it’s starting point  it doesn’t mature.

The KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle should be applied with a vengeance to all solutions. Solving the problem where the user has to be an expert to use the software is unacceptable and unprofitable.
